The heavily used route across the Plateau is very accessible from the summit of Cairngorm, around the top of Coire an t-Sneachda and cuts across the plateau to join the path to the Ben Macdui summit. An outstanding wilderness area the erosion of plateau needs containing to protect the fragile montane flora.
Work was programmed to fit with the short weather window and to avoid disturbing ground nesting birds, and is now complete. The work mainly involved innovative ‘light touch techniques’ and intensive landscaping and alignment, by due to the topography of the area and to contain the path and create a sustainable path surface. The results so far have been excellent with walkers now tending to stick to the defined lines and the vegetation is beginning to recover, though the short growing season at this elevation means this will take a few years.
